DESCRIPTION:Congressional Forum is the Chamber's public policy series featuring local\, state and federal representatives to speak about issues relevant to the area's business community. This month's featured speaker is Mayor David Alvey\, Mayor & CEO of the Unified Government of KCK/WyCo.\n\n\n\nMayor David Alvey\, Mayor & CEO of the Unified Government of KCK/WyCo\nMayor David Alvey was elected November 7th\, 2017 as the 30th Mayor of the City of Kansas City\, KS and the 4th Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City\, KS.\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Wyandotte County\, Alvey is a Dotte to the core.  His family legacy in the area began in 1857\, when his great-great grandmother came to the town of  Wyandotte.  In 1869 his great grandfather\, John Gibbs\, settled in the Shawnee Township\, and established the first school in the Oak Grove area and insisted that the school educate all children\, white and black students. After meeting much resistance\, Gibbs eventually established his own school where black children were welcomed and educated.\n\n\n\nAlthough Gibbs' philosophy was not popular during his time\, his sense of justice continues to inspire Alvey today in his new role as Mayor/CEO.\n\n\n\nAlvey's grandparents\, Leo and Kate Alvey\, raised a family of seven children on a farm cultivating fruits and vegetables in the Township of Shawnee. Leo entered public service in 1932 when he ran for a seat on the Township and defeated the incumbent by one vote.  Alvey's uncle\, Ed\, was elected to the Township in 1956 and his father\, Lloyd\, was elected a Justice of the Peace in 1960.  Leo\, Ed and Lloyd earned reputations as honest and dedicated public servants during their terms in the Shawnee Township.\n\nDavid Alvey has continued this legacy public service:\n\n\n	He recently worked as the Assistant Principal for Faculty Formation and Professional Development at Rockhurst High School\n\n\n\n	He served as the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) president and also previously served as the BPU vice president and secretary\n\n\n\n	He is a member of the American Public Power Association (APPA) and currently serves on the APPA Policy Makers Council\n\n\n\n	Alvey served on the Planning and Zoning Commission of the Unified Government\n\n\n\n	He served as the dean of students and also taught U.S. history at Rockhurst High School\n\n\n\n	Served as Program Director of the Student Support Program in Marin County\, California\n\n\n\n	Alvey is the former National Chair of Dean's of Students of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association\n\nAlvey learned at an early age through his family's political career that a good family name and reputation is earned by honesty and hard work that's devoted to the citizenry. Alvey is an extremely proud resident of the City of Kansas City\, KS and County of Wyandotte County. He graduated from Savior of the World High School and attended Rockhurst College before graduating Summa Cum Laude in Philosophy and Letters from St. Louis University.\n\n\n\nHe is going to work to keep resident's trust through programs and initiatives that will continue to improve the quality of life throughout our community.\n\n\n\nDavid and his wife Ann Marie are the parents of (5) children: Juliana\, Christiana\, Joseph\, Mariana and Analisa.
