The KCK Chamber presents Unified Government of KCK/WyCo Mayor & CEO David Alvey for a business update and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayor Alvey Bio:
Mayor David Alvey was elected November 7th, 2017 as the 30th Mayor of the City of Kansas City, KS and the 4th Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, KS.
Born and raised in Wyandotte County, Alvey is a Dotte to the core. His family legacy in the area began in 1857, when his great-great grandmother came to the town of Wyandotte. In 1869 his great grandfather, John Gibbs, settled in the Shawnee Township, and established the first school in the Oak Grove area and insisted that the school educate all children, white and black students. After meeting much resistance, Gibbs eventually established his own school where black children were welcomed and educated.
Although Gibbs’ philosophy was not popular during his time, his sense of justice continues to inspire Alvey today in his new role as Mayor/CEO.
Alvey’s grandparents, Leo and Kate Alvey, raised a family of seven children on a farm cultivating fruits and vegetables in the Township of Shawnee. Leo entered public service in 1932 when he ran for a seat on the Township and defeated the incumbent by one vote. Alvey’s uncle, Ed, was elected to the Township in 1956 and his father, Lloyd, was elected a Justice of the Peace in 1960. Leo, Ed and Lloyd earned reputations as honest and dedicated public servants during their terms in the Shawnee Township.
David Alvey has continued this legacy public service:
